The first Minnesota Cheba Hut fires up the neighborhood with “toasted” subs, cold drinks and laid-back atmosphere this December
Minneapolis, MN (RestaurantNews.com) The City of Lakes has been fervently waiting for Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs to open its doors, and now that wait is finally over. The counter-culture themed sub shop is firing up its latest joint at 1118 W Lake St. on Dec. 8, and it’s bringing every ounce of weird, wild, toasted energy the city deserves.
After years of being in fast-casual purgatory, the new owners – made up of young restaurant legends who know how to mix good food, good vibes and good people – stepped in to put things back on track. The franchising duo includes Minneapolis native Nick Reckinger and Matt Alexander, the master restaurant growers who started Colorado’s Georgia Boys BBQ. The two teamed up with General Manager Chuck Irwin to make Uptown’s newest shop a straight-up neighborhood hotspot. Reckinger, a proud Dunwoody grad, said it best: “This one’s for the homies who remember Uptown before it got fancy.”
Inside, it’s pure Minnesota madness. Local artist Ross Palbicki went off with a custom mural featuring Cheba Hut’s adorably rude mascot, Flip the Bird – while he enjoys a blunt-sized sandwich (or maybe a sandwich-sized blunt) – as well as a tribute to legendary local artist, Prince, and the regionally relevant loon in fresh shades and iced out with some bling. Every inch of the shop screams local pride – with a full bar, craft beer lineup, and walls that look like the Twin Cities on a weekend bender.
“Minnesotans are just the right amount of crazy and I love it,” said Alexander. “When Nick suggested we take this brand that we already loved from Colorado to his home state, I honestly wasn’t sure, as I didn’t know much about the culture or the people. Would they love this as much as we do? Turns out, they might love it even more – which is insane. I can’t wait to turn these Minneapolis heads into Cheba Hut homies. Our vibe perfectly matches their vibe.”
Cheba Hut Minneapolis is here to flip the sandwich scene on its head – no corporate suits, no cookie-cutter energy, just subs, munchies, Kool-Aid, and a whole lot of personality.
